Globe and Mail Update

Do not pass go

By Tory MP Colin Mayes own logic, he should be jailed. Mayes latest column, which he forwarded to 10 newspapers, suggests bad journalists should be jailed. One-day later, he retracted "without reservation." Not a sentence or a paragraph: the entire piece.

Either the PMO forced Mayes to retract from his true beliefs, or what he originally penned was a fabrication. In either case, he's not being honest with his readers. Colin Mayes is guilty of what he's criticizing: bad journalism.

Whatever the stripe

ABC's John Green has a hate on for politicians of all stripes. The executive producer of Good Morning America's weekend edition was shamed last week after an e-mail surfaced proclaiming, "Bush makes me sick." In the spirit of bipartisanship, Green's sword swings both ways — this time musing about Bill Clinton's former Secretary of State: "Albright has Jew shame."

Who you know in the PMO

[Stephen Harper] "If there are Hill staffers who dream of making it rich trying to lobby a future Conservative government, if that's true of any of you, you had better make different plans, or leave,"

Kevin Macintosh and David Salvatore must have been away that day. Both were recently working for Conservative cabinet ministers and now -- you guessed it, are lobbying the Conservative government.

Fear not, Macintosh and Salvatore are in good company, joining Ken Boessenkool and Yaroslav Baran, former Conservative election campaign strategists to lobbyist stardom.

As for campaign promises, John Reynolds, the Conservative party's campaign co-chair, has the inside scoop: 'campaigns are campaigns.'

Red America Part Two

As a result of Ben Domenech's admitted plagiarism, his world continues to crumble. Accordingly so. Benched at Red State, unemployed at the Washington Post, and now word that he's no longer a book editor with Regnery Publishing.

In damage control mode, Regnery's official line is they actually parted ways the day he started blogging for the Washington Post -- prior to the plagiarism debacle. This contradicts Domenech's Post bio, which claims he was employed at Regnery and the Post. Regardless of the timing, Regnery had little choice: Domenech had to go and he's toeing the official company line.

As for the Post, the show must go on. According to Executive Editor, Jim Brady, another blogger will replace Domenech's Red America. To flawlessly get it right the second time around, they need to look no further than Ed Morrissey.

One-sided story

Tony Burman's latest letter from the editor discusses "media criticism of Christian Peacemakers in Iraq." To sum up: "I find these outbursts of media hostility toward the Christian Peacemakers somewhat perplexing."

I'm perplexed as well: The head of CBC's news operations fails to mention one-key important fact/document: the CPT's initial press release. This of course was the basis of the harsh and deserved coverage. Via the press release, the Christian Peacemaker Teams vow to "love our enemies" (murdering kidnappers) and makes no mention whatsoever of the soldiers who risked their lives in lieu of the hostages' freedom.

To further Burman's one-sided media vilification, he fails to link to the media organizations he quotes and criticizes. Had he, the reader would understand the rationale for criticizing the CPT.

If you're going to play an editor-in-chief in real life, it generally helps to present both sides of the story. Burman should update and correct his letter. Otherwise, he should change his title to columnist.

Harper, Emerson cleared

Ethics czar Bernard Shapiro has cleared Prime Minister Harper and Tory Minister David Emerson from any wrongdoing in the election defection affair.

However, Shapiro feels the public's vote "was somehow devalued, if not betrayed." In addition, he is calling on Parliament for a debate on floor crossers.

Interestingly enough -- Shapiro's report contains a passage which may be applicable to Belinda Stronach: "Clearly, if the Prime Minister were to approach a member with an offer of a Cabinet position with the sole intent and specific purpose of acquiring that member's vote directly linked to a parliamentary proceeding existing at that time, such conduct would be inappropriate and unacceptable. Conversely, if a member of the House were to approach the Prime Minister indicating that, in exchange for a Cabinet position, his or her vote could be acquired for the sole intent and specific purpose that is directly linked to a parliamentary proceeding existing at that time, that too, would be inappropriate and unacceptable."

Peter MacKay: call the PMO

While Cabinet Ministers in the Harper Government aren't permitted to speak outside of the party's five main priorities, Foreign Affair's Minister Peter MacKay should seek approval from one of the three unelected communication officials in the PMO to comment on the election situation in Belarus.

Protesters have been threatened with the death penalty, independent election monitors barred from entry, numerous media outlets shut down, journalists assaulted/detained and opposition candidates jailed.

The rigged outcome of the election is hours away -- and a forgone conclusion; 'Europe's last dictator' will reign again. Nonetheless, over the last several weeks, countries around the world have found their voice; democracy must prevail, Alexander Lukashenko's dictatorial actions are unacceptable. Also unacceptable, Canada's deafening silence.

Paul Wells said it best: "You can judge a government by the enemies it makes — or declines to."

Monday, Mr. MacKay needs to make good; the next election in Belarus mustn't be a recap of today's.

While Republicans have left President Bush out to dry on the Dubai Ports deal, he does have his defenders: nineteen-year old nephew Pierce G. Bush. It's generally not a good idea to go on the Today Show when you've "pulled an all nighter," but in fairness to Pierce, he is "going to hit the bed, you know what I'm saying."

Your tax dollars

The Canadian government classifies Hamas as a terrorist organization. Nonetheless, Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay is sending Canadian aid monies to Hamas, the same organization that not only condones suicide bombers, but also calls for the destruction of Israel.

Power changes people awful quickly:

[November 16, 2004: Foreign Affairs Critic Stockwell Day] "Mr. Speaker, the (Liberal) government has made a decision to fund the UN Relief and Works Agency despite the fact that there is clear evidence that this UN agency has on its payroll agents of the terrorist group Hamas.

"Why is the government taking such a casual attitude toward the security of Palestinians while it has terrorists in its midst?"

[November 1, 2004: Opposition Leader Stephen Harper] "In Parliament, Conservatives have been at the forefront of encouraging Canada to take a stronger position in the fight against global terrorism. It was only due to unrelenting pressure from this party that the Liberal government finally and reluctantly moved to outlaw Hezbollah and Hamas."

On January 23, 2006, I was re-elected as the Member of Parliament for Vancouver—Kingsway. On February 6, 2006 I accepted a challenge from Prime Minister Stephen Harper, to join his government to ensure the federal government reflects Vancouver's values and serves its interests.

These past several days have been a difficult time for my family and me. I know many of my constituents are having difficulty with the choice I have made. To those of you who are upset with my decision - I apologize. However, I did not come by this decision lightly and I stand firm behind the decision to become a part of this new government.

Prior to my 2004 entry into politics I had a lengthy career in government and in business. Politics was the last place I thought I would end up. Then former Prime Minister Paul Martin encouraged me to serve our city and our province in his government. He convinced me that Canadians won't fix government until we attract people who care more about issues and results than ideology, and that loyalty to ideas, tangible improvements and smart government are what public service is all about. I agreed and I was honoured to serve then and I remain committed to the constituents of Vancouver-Kingsway today.

On February 6, 2006 Mr. Stephen Harper became Prime Minister of Canada. In assembling his government, Prime Minister Harper encouraged me to serve our city and province again, this time in his Conservative government. While this was a difficult decision for me, it came down to a question of effectiveness and how I could best serve my province, my community and the people I represent. I truly believe that I can serve you best by giving you direct representation inside our new government. I feel that I am now in a better position to advance your priorities.

My priorities have not changed. We need a strong economy focused on international trade and the benefits the Pacific Gateway can bring. We need to intensify the fight against crime. Our anti-crime initiatives will start dealing with this important issue. We need to ensure our health care system is delivering high quality and timely services. I will continue to fight for improvements in our immigration system and settlement support services, including a better approach to foreign credentialing. We need to put priority on education, skills development and training for people at all stages of their lives, and we need to support our seniors so they have the facilities and resources to meet their needs.

I will continue to work hard on the same issues and priorities that were your concerns in the past. I will continue to serve the constituents of Vancouver — Kingsway to the best of my ability and I will continue to ensure your views are presented in the House of Commons.

My Constituency Office was always non partisan, and will remain a non partisan, service oriented office at the same location with the same contact numbers — 2148 Kingsway, Vancouver, BC, V5N 2T5. Tel: 604 775 6263 Fax: 604 775 6284.

Thank you and I look forward to continuing to serving you.

    David Emerson, P.C., M.P.
    Member of Parliament
    Vancouver — Kingsway"

'To go where the Mounties don't go'

I first met talk-show host Peter Warren when I started my radio career several years ago. Radio being the intimate medium that it is, I felt like we really had met the first time I tuned him on the dial, many years prior.

An hour before my second show (ever), the feature guest skipped out. My face of fear said it all; the end was near. Warren leaned out of his office, "Cooker, you want Heidi Fleiss?" And so it went down, Heidi Fleiss, live on a heritage news-talk station from her cell phone in Los Angeles. It was brilliant radio as the Hollywood Madame asked me to hold while we were live on-air so she could purchase something. Sometimes silence says it all. But I digress.

Since then, North America's longest running talk-show host and I have tangoed with a couple of bank fiascos, and unbeknownst to Warren, he taught me a few things about courage in between.

Warren never did his work for fame or fortune; he worked to give a voice to people who didn't have one. Whether it was the four convicts who gave themselves up live on-air, to his extensive work with David Milgaard, James Driskell and Thomas Sophonow, or to his current work of 14 murder cases, this Sunday Canada loses an all-important, one-of-a-kind voice.

As one door closes, another opens. If you can, tune in.
